Brain Tumour Awareness Week & Clothing for Brain Tumour Sufferers

This week is International Brain Tumours Awareness Week, which is brain tumour weekdedicated to raising awareness and understanding of brain tumours.

What are brain tumours?
In the UK, around 9,200 people are year are diagnosed with primary brain or central nervous system (CNS) tumours. These are tumours that start in the brain or the CNS. They can be either benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

People can also be affected by secondary brain tumours. This is when cancer cells spread to the brain from another part of the body. When these cells reach the brain or CNS, they can grow and form a secondary tumour.

Adapted Clothing for World Arthritis Day – 12th October

Thursday 12th October is World Arthritis Day #WAD2017 and this year the message is Early arthritisDiagnosis:  Don’t Delay, Connect Today.

Early diagnosis is key to preventing further damage, but rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) often receive delayed or no diagnosis. If not treated appropriately, daily activities are affected – reducing peoples’ quality of life and affecting physical abilities.

This is often due to a lack of awareness – it’s important to know the symptoms of RMDs, and to contact a healthcare professional if you have concerns.

  • Inflammation indicated by joint swelling, stiffness, redness, and/or warmth
  • Persistent muscle and joint pain
  • Tenderness
  • Extreme fatigue, lack of energy, weakness, or a feeling of malaise
  • Stiffness and restricted range in movement or flexibility
  • Joint deformity
  • Symptoms affecting the internal organs
  • Invisible symptoms e.g. depression and anxiety

At Adaptawear we are supporters of World Arthritis Day and we supply a range of adapted clothing available specially designed for arthritis sufferers.  Take a look at our website to see some of our ladies and men’s discreetly adapted clothing to aid people with arthritis.  By replacing zips with Velcro, buttons with magnets or having long zips with zip pulls enables the garments to open wide and stiff and sore arthritic hands are able to manage the fastenings helping you to remain independent for longer.   Our clothing range includes:

The different types of care and support you can get at home

There are various types of adult care that you can choose from. We have compiled this list Care choicesfor you to have a brief guide into what types of different care and support there is for you at home.

Home Care (Domiciliary Care)

For many people it is important to stay at home in their own, familiar surroundings near to friends and family. At the same time, remaining independent may also be very important to you but that can mean you need a little extra help. Some carefully chosen home care (sometimes known as domiciliary care) can often be the perfect solution to getting a little help whilst retaining a good level of personal freedom. Visit the care choices website to find homecare

Housing with Care

A Care Village, or retirement community, is a very broad, generic term that covers many varieties of housing for retirees and seniors – especially designed or geared for people who no longer work, or restricted to those over a certain age.

It differs from a retirement home which is a single building or small complex where no “common areas” for socializing exist. Many care villages provide people with independent accommodation and may include shared facilities, such as meeting rooms, a library or pool. It might also provide lifestyle services and social activities, such as organised outings, joint meals, craft, visiting doctors and allied health professionals.

Specialist Services

If you have a physical disability or a long-term illness, Adult Social Care and other organisations in the independent and not-for-profit sectors can provide a range of services to help you live as independently as possible. There are also services available to support someone who may be your carer. As with all support from Adult Social Care, your needs must firstly be assessed to determine the best ways to support you; your carer can also have an assessment. You may wish to discuss your needs with your family doctor in the first instance. If eligible, support from Adult Social Care includes: allocation of a Personal Budget; occupational therapists; help with equipment and adaptations to your home; activities within the community; help at home, and with leaving hospital; short breaks; help if required to move into residential or nursing home care; and help for carers.

Help at Home

Support is available to you to help at home with day-to-day personal care and domestic activities so that you can continue to live as independently as possible in your own home.

  • Help at home services and support might include:
  • Adaptations to your home – changes can be made to your home to help you do things more easily and safely. Small items such as grab rails can be provided free of charge
  • Help at home with domestic tasks such as housework, cooking, shopping and gardening
  • Elderly care services such as delivery of meals to your home

Dementia Care at home

Dementia Friends

People with dementia sometimes need a helping hand to go about their daily lives and feel included in their community. Dementia Friends is giving people an understanding of dementia and the small things they can do that can make a difference to people living with dementia – from helping someone find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia and the explaining the different types of dementia care available.

Dementia Friends want to create a network of a million Dementia Friends across England. See http://www.dementiafriends.org.uk for further information.
