Today is World Alzheimer’s Day

alzheimers1Remember to GO PURPLE ON SEPTEMBER 21ST.
Alzheimer’s is a disease that causes dementia. It is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for about two-thirds of cases in the elderly.”

Alzheimer’s often develops slowly over several years. It is not always obvious to begin with and symptoms can overlap with other illnesses.

Sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish Alzheimer’s from mild forgetfulness which can be seen in normal ageing.

Everyone with Alzheimer’s will experience symptoms in their own way. Early signs usually include difficulties forming new memories, but people may also experience language or spatial awareness difficulties.

Typical early symptoms of Alzheimer’s include:

• Regularly forgetting recent events, names and faces.
• Becoming increasingly repetitive.
• Regularly misplacing items or putting them in odd places.
• Confusion about the time of day.
• Disorientation, especially away from your normal surroundings.
• Getting lost.
• Problems finding the right words.
• Mood or behaviour problems such as apathy, irritability, or losing confidence.

Every year since 1994 Alzheimer organisations have observed World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September and the day will continue to play an important and key role during the World Alzheimer’s day events. The theme for World Alzheimer’s day 2015 is Remember Me.

Adaptawear is keen to promote the Memory Walk, an initiative organised by the UK based Alzheimer’s Society to show their commitment to remembering those who they have lost. All sponsorship funds raised at each Alzheimer’s Walk will go towards the work of the Alzheimer’s Society in that specific area.

For more information on Alzheimer’s please visit our factsheet and don’t forget to take a look at our range of specially adapted clothes suitable for dementia sufferers.

NEW LADIES CLOTHES!

We have recently added some new ladies adapted clothing products in stock just in time for these chilly and wet days we have been experiencing recently.

aFirst up is the Assisted Ladies Wrap which is a very comfortable and warm wrap made of a thick fleece. This wrap simply places over your shoulders and poppered down each side – so no need to raise your arms!  This wrap is ideal for out and about or when extra warmth is needed at home.  One size available in choice of 4 colours.  b

Next is the Assisted Ladies Cape which again is extremely warm, comfortable and has a high end look! Front fastening with poppers for ease of putting on and off.  Feel great this coming winter and available three colours in sizes Small and Medium.

dLastly is our Richmond Short Sleeve Wrap-Over Dress where we have just received new stock of all sizes and colours.  This practical dress opens to the waist at the front giving plenty of room to put over the head and insert arms and the back of the dress has an overlap going from the shoulder blades to hem.  This not only makes assisted toileting quick and easy but means when the front buttons are open, there is plenty of room to slip the dress over the head and pull comfortably down.
