Tomorrow Is World Stroke Day 2014 (29th October)

Tomorrow marks World Stroke Day (29th October), which was established by the World Stroke Organization in 2006 to help spread public awareness of the world’s high stroke risk and stroke prevalence. Over at The World Stroke Organization they are dedicated to improving care for stroke survivors worldwide. World Stroke Day 2014 will focus on translating knowledge into action and generating a movement that stimulates collective responsibility and action. This year their main focus is on Women, for the below reasons:

  • Women have a higher stroke mortality rate than men
  • Many of the major stroke risk factors occur more frequently in women or are sex-specific to women
  • Women with stroke do not receive comparable care to men with stroke
  • There is a gender gap in stroke education

Stroke (also known as cerebrovascular disease) occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so it starts to die.

What are the warning signs of a stroke?

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

There are many campaigns happening to celebrate World Stroke Day; so we encourage you to please get involved if you can.  More information on activities can be found here.
